Kareem Jackson knew his team needed the ball back.Third-and-8 from the Las Vegas 44-yard line, Raiders quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo hit Jakobi Meyers over the middle and Jackson laid out to try to stop him short of the first down.Jackson, though, hit Meyers high and Meyers crumpled to the turf. Players from both teams gathered around before he was able to sit up on his own and walk off the field with help from trainers.A scary situation and a costly 15-yard penalty on Jackson. A stop the Broncos desperately needed and failed to get — Las Vegas ran the final 2 minutes, 54 seconds off the clock thanks to a Garoppolo first-down run a minute later to secure a 17-16 victory. But also, hopefully, a serious injury avoided.“I just want to say I hope he’s alright,” Jackson told reporters afterward. “Obviously we don’t play this game to hurt guys. It’s a tough sport we play. … Unfortunately stuff like that happens. Definitely sending my thoughts and prayers ...

ARLINGTON, Texas — Oakland Athletics rookie right-hander Luis Medina had a rough start to Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers, and the ending was not much better.Medina allowed three runs in the first inning and two more in the fifth in what became a 9-4 A’s loss to the Rangers at Globe Life Field, as Texas won consecutive games for the first time in September.Former Athletic Marcus Semien homered twice among his four hits, and Corey Seager went deep for the 30th time this season.Andrew Heaney (10-6), the odd man out of the Rangers rotation with All-Star right-hander Nathan Eovaldi back from the injured list, struck out six over 3 2/3 scoreless innings after taking over for Jon Gray in the third. It was the first relief appearance for the left-hander after 27 starts this season.Semien matched his career high with four hits for the second time in four games. He set a franchise record with his eighth leadoff homer this season, part of a terrible first inning off Medina...

Can Farhan Zaidi’s team meeting propel the SF Giants to the playoffs?

Published Sat, 22 Feb 2025 13:09:55 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — What can a team meeting accomplish? A regular feature of many clubhouses over the years, it’s something that’s easy to credit when it’s followed by success and equally easy to dismiss when it doesn’t lead to the desired results.“I’ve always been against meetings,” Giants reliever Luke Jackson said before their series finale against the Rockies, ESPN’s Sunday night game of the week. “I’ve been a part of most meetings and we lose afterward and they’re terrible. But this year, we’re 2-0 after meetings.”The latest, first reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, came Friday, before their first game against Colorado, and the message came from on high. President Farhan Zaidi was first to address the group, but speakers also included longtime coach Ron Wotus and a handful of veterans. What followed were back-to-back wins, their first of September after starting the month with six straight losses. The team also responded to...

I haven’t felt this way in 15, 20 years.”The fans gathered underneath each tailgate tent seemed to be having the same conversation.“It’s a new beginning, right?” Christian Goodwin asked rhetorically. “New ownership, it’s been 26 years of you-know-what, but it’s a new day.”For some, like Michael Pope, the Commander’s victorious home opener against the Arizona Cardinals at FedEx Field was a sort of reunion.“I took a hiatus over the last two years because of Dan Snyder,” Pope said with tickets in hand. “It’s nice to be focused on the performance on the field and not have to worry about our ownership doing anything.&...

STRAFFAN, Ireland (AP) — Vincent Norrman gave Sweden two straight wins on the European tour when he shot 7-under 65 to capture the Irish Open title on Sunday as Rory McIlroy faltered in the final round by hitting into the water on three holes.A week after 23-year-old Ludvig Aberg won the European Masters in Switzerland to secure a spot on the Ryder Cup team, the 25-year-old Norrman won at The K Club to earn his second victory in two months. He won the Barbasol Championship in July, co-sanctioned by the European and PGA Tour. Play was delayed for about 90 minutes because of bad weather soon after the leading groups teed off, with McIlroy at that stage in a four-way share of the lead on 12-under par.
