ATLANTA (AP) — Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty on Thursday and sought to sever his case from some other defendants who are accused along with him of illegally trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee had set arraignment hearings on Sept. 6 for Trump and the 18 others charged in the case. Trump's court filing entering a not guilty plea also waived arraignment, meaning he won’t have to show up for that. The decision to skip an in-person appearance averts the dramatic arraignments that have accompanied the three other criminal cases Trump faces, in which the Republican former president has been forced amid tight security into a courtroom and entered “not guilty” pleas before crowds of spectators. Georgia courts have fairly permissive rules on news cameras in the courtroom, and this means Trump won't have to enter a plea on television.McAfee said Thursday that he planned to allow live-streaming of the ...Florida Missing Child Alert issued for 15-year-old girl who may be accompanied by 21-year-old man

Western politicians and educators have observed that a significant number of overseas Chinese students are unwilling to engage in conversations about China, particularly about the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP). And even if they do, when faced with criticism directed at the government, they often perceive the West, especially the United States, as intentionally trying to stifle China’s ascent. Yet, time and again, Chinese youth are unable to adequately defend the CCP, making it extremely difficult for these institutions to initiate genuine dialogue. However, their reluctance isn’t surprising, as it is shaped by two concerns: fear of being discriminated against abroad, and fear of persecution in their home country. The first of these worries rev...Germany’s undertaker-in-chief

BERLIN — Olaf Scholz was dressing the corpse.“We’ve had a very successful track record this year and last,” the German leader insisted at the outset of a two-day retreat for his fractious Cabinet north of Berlin this week.No one bought it, least of all Scholz. As if to acknowledge as much, the chancellor wore a somber expression as he delivered his monotone “why can’t we all just get along” plea to the cameras. “It would be good if everyone could use their communications strategies to contribute,” he concluded, with a lifeless functionality. Standing at dusk in a dark raincoat next to a centuries-old linden tree, Scholz looked more like an undertaker than the chancellor of Germany. It was an apposite choice of clothing: Scholz might have another two years in office, but for all intents and purposes his government is a goner, its ambitious agenda bled dry.It was never going to be easy to mesh the priorities of Germany’s first multiparty national coalition in decades, espec...Grant Shapps is Britain’s new defense secretary. What does it mean for Ukraine?

LONDON — With Ben Wallace’s exit as U.K. defense secretary Thursday, the original power duo who came out fighting for Ukraine are now both gone. While Boris Johnson gained grudging respect across the world for his rapid response to the Russian invasion — and bromance with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — Johnson’s old pal Wallace was equally lauded for standing four-square behind him and doing much of the legwork. Now Wallace’s replacement at the Ministry of Defense, Grant Shapps, must show he’s just as tough.Shapps is a well-established figure at the top of British politics, yet a surprise pick for defense secretary all the same. With the exception of one junior role in the department for international development, he has only ever held domestic portfolios over a long career in office which began back in 2010 under David Cameron’s leadership. The former business and energy secretary is also one of only three ministers without some form of milita...Person hit in head by plane propeller at Norwood Airport
