Warriors vs. Kings: Andrew Wiggins “feels fresh” in time for first round

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:25:42 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO — Andrew Wiggins hasn’t played an NBA game since Feb. 13. It’s unideal that his anticipated return requires him to dive back in for a playoff game. There’s reason to question if Wiggins’ conditioning will be up to par given how much time he spent out of NBA action — in the more than 50 days he was absent, Wiggins wasn’t doing much basketball activity, but a few workouts and getting shots up. But Wiggins said it only took two days for him to start feeling like himself. And now he feels like his tank is full.“I feel normal, I feel refreshed, there’s nothing I don’t think my body’s going to hurt if I do that or anything, I feel fresh,” Wiggins said on Friday, minutes before the team left on the bus for Sacramento.Head coach Steve Kerr wouldn’t reveal how many minutes Wiggins is expected to play or if he’ll come off the bench in Game 1 of the Warriors’ first round series against the Sacramento Kings on Saturd...

As surrounding states continue restricting access to abortions and gender-affirming care, Colorado has now made additional protections and coverage state law.Gov. Jared Polis signed three bills that were part of Democrats’ reproductive care package Friday afternoon, surrounded by sponsors of the bills and dozens of supporters who applauded the state’s continued efforts to cement Colorado’s status as a safe haven.“I’m excited by the work of advocates and legislators to further Colorado’s reputation as a beacon of freedom, a beacon of choice, a beacon of individuality where we live our own lives on our own terms in a Colorado for all,” Polis said.In anticipation of the fall of the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision, Colorado lawmakers passed legislation in 2022 guaranteeing the right to abortions in state law. Since then, they have been working to bolster access. Advocates also intend to ask voters to approve a ballot measure in November 2024 that would solidify that r...

Suspects charged in fatal shooting of 5-year-old girl on Fremont freeway

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:25:42 GMT

Three suspected gang members were charged with murder Friday in the fatal shooting of a 5-year-old girl while she rode in a car with her parents on Interstate 880 in Fremont — a case that may further test the public’s response to progressive charging and sentencing reforms championed by Alameda County’s district attorney. The charges announced by Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price in the April 8 death of Eliyanah Crisostomo, 5, of Santa Clara may draw attention for what is not included: any potential sentencing enhancements, additional allegations that could extend potential prison terms by years or decades if the defendants are convicted. A gang enhancement to the murder charge was included for each suspect when they were booked by the California Highway Patrol. The suspects were identified in jail records as Humberto Anaya, 29, Emmanuel Sarango, 27, and Kristo Ayala, 25. The charges announced by the district attorney’s office Friday included murder, assa...

Former Sen. Barbara Boxer to Feinstein: “I would call the people who love me … and make a decision”

Published Thu, 20 Feb 2025 19:25:42 GMT

When Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein were first elected U.S. senators from California in 1992 — a historic victory for women — Feinstein sat Boxer down and told her, “You’ve got to stick with this. The longer you stay, the better you’ll feel, the more you’ll get done.”Boxer took the advice to heart and stayed in office 24 years before retiring in 2017.“She was right. There’s no question about it,” Boxer told the Bay Area News Group on Friday. “But having said that, you’ve got to be able to do the job.”Feinstein has been unable to do that job for the past two months as the 89-year-old and oldest member of the U.S. Senate slowly recovers from shingles. She has missed more than 60 votes so far this year, leading a number of her fellow Democrats to call for her resignation, including Bay Area Congressmember Ro Khanna.Although Boxer said it’s Feinstein’s decision, she said she has reached out to those close to the ailing senator and made it clear that if she were in Feinst...

BOSTON (AP) — Two-time Olympic gold medalist. Twelve-time major marathon winner. World record-holder. And still, Eliud Kipchoge has something to prove.“I think Boston is a game-changer for me,” the world’s greatest marathoner said as he prepared for his debut in the world’s most prestigious road race. “Boston is the oldest marathon ever, and I think actually any serious marathoner should put his or her own feet once — if not a lot in his life — in the Boston streets.”A 38-year-old Kenyan who has been collecting marathon victories since 2013, Kipchoge will make his Boston Marathon debut on Monday in the 127th edition of the world’s longest-running long run. A victory would give him wins in an unprecedented five of the six major marathons. Kipchoge also has run the two fastest marathons ever — and four of the top six — breaking his own world record in September at Berlin with a time of 2 hours, 1 minute, 9 seconds. He also owns the course records in London and Tokyo. That doesn’t even...
