Published Wed, 05 Mar 2025 01:15:15 GMT

Kiz: Can quarterback Russell Wilson handle the truth? Ending the Broncos’ long playoff drought isn’t about him. Not really. Yes, Wilson needs to be competent. But it’s a dominant defense that will return Denver to the Super Bowl hunt. And this D is very good. It can’t be truly dominant, however, without a great pass rush. That’s essential in the AFC West, where Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes rules. So can Frank Clark and Randy Gregory get the job done? What’s the chance that these two edge-rushers combine for 20 sacks?Take Our Poll(function(d,c,j){if(!d.getElementById(j)){var pd=d.createElement(c),s;pd.id=j;pd.src='https://www.denverpost.com/wp-content/plugins/polldaddy/js/polldaddy-shortcode.js';s=d.getElementsByTagName(c)[0];s.parentNode.insertBefore(pd,s);} else if(typeof jQuery !=='undefined')jQuery(d.body).trigger('pd-script-load');}(document,'script','pd-polldaddy-loader'));Gabriel: They’ll have a chance if they combine for 30 game...

49ers QB Roll Call: Will Brock Purdy sit out against Raiders?

SANTA CLARA — Here is Monday’s practice report on how the 49ers’ quarterbacks looked at training camp:BROCK PURDYPurdy’s comeback from elbow surgery will carry over this week against the Raiders, albeit in joint practices Thursday and Friday rather than in Sunday’s preseason opener.“I doubt Brock plays,” coach Kyle Shanahan said. “I haven’t fully decided it yet.”In seemingly hogging the ball Monday in camp’s hottest practice (87 degrees), Purdy completed 9-of-18 passes, one of which got intercepted by Tashaun GIpson Sr. when tipped by cornerback Charvarius Ward. Perhaps Purdy’s best throw came when he found Jauan Jennings at the front right pylon for a touchdown against Ward, who playfully jawed with Jennings earlier in practice and again after that play.Purdy is expected to practice in Tuesday’s lighter session — Monday’s spanned two hours — and then, after Wednesday’s day off, get...

Ramón Laureano, who was designated for assignment by the Oakland A’s over the weekend, has landed in the middle of a division playoff race. The 29-year-old outfielder was claimed off waivers by Cleveland and figures to move right into the middle of the Guardians’ outfield mix.Laureano goes from the team with the worst record in baseball (32-80) to a team battling for the A.L. Central title. Cleveland (54-58) trails Minnesota by just 4.5 games. The Guardians likely will have to win the Central to return to the playoffs for the second year in a row. They entered the day 8.5 games out of the final spot in the AL wild-card race. The A’s placed Laureano, who appeared to be a budding star for the franchise in 2019, to make room for the return of center fielder Esteury Ruiz from the 10-day injured list. But it also could signal that top prospect Lawrence Butler might soon arrive in Oakland.Butler, 23, had a breakout spring training despite never playing a game above Single-...
